Midalia Steel opens new Port Hedland facility

September 23, 2026

Midalia Steel customers in the Pilbara now have easier access to steel, with a new 6,000-square-metre facility opening in Port Hedland.

The new site means more steel can be held locally, helping customers get the products they need without relying on regular deliveries from Karratha or transport from Perth.

More steel available locally

Previously, steel was transported to Port Hedland from Karratha several times a week. For urgent orders, that could mean a five-hour round trip or bringing material more than 1,600 kilometres from Perth.

The new Port Hedland site gives local customers easier access to a range of products including:

  • reinforcing steel
  • structural steel
  • plate
  • tube products.

The facility will support local fabricators, trades, residential and commercial construction, as well as businesses supplying the Pilbara’s resources and renewable energy sectors.

Built for the Pilbara

The Pilbara continues to see strong activity across resources, renewable energy and construction.

Having more steel available locally means customers can respond faster when requirements change and reduce the time and cost involved in sourcing material from outside Port Hedland.

Midalia Steel Regional Manager Mark Kemp said the investment was about putting steel closer to customers.

“Instead of waiting for steel to travel hundreds of kilometres from Karratha or more than 1,600 kilometres from Perth, Midalia customers will now have steel available locally when they need it,” Mark said.

“That matters in a region like the Pilbara, where downtime is expensive and customers need access to steel quickly.”

Supporting local projects

The Port Hedland facility strengthens Midalia Steel’s ability to support customers across the region, from everyday trade and construction requirements through to major projects.

It complements Midalia Steel’s existing presence in Western Australia and gives Pilbara customers another local option for sourcing steel closer to where the work is happening. Whether you’re working on a fabrication job, commercial build, residential project or supporting one of the Pilbara’s major industries, our Port Hedland team is ready to help.
